Artist Statement:
Building on a fascination with the idiosyncratic nature of instamatic Polaroid photography, my attempt is to create paintings that deal with ideas of memory, representation, and perception. To explore these ideas, basically I create reproductions of reproductions. However, my goal is not to create strictly “photo-real paintings, but rather something else. Something that has the look and feel of a Photograph (I.E. selective focus, blurring etc.), yet seems to reside somewhere between the objective reality of a snapshot and the subjectivity of a memory or fleeting glance. The formal qualities that interest me in exploring this idea are surface texture, light and shadow, figure ground relationships and the quixotic nature of Photography. By creating images with unusual compositions, photographic idiosyncrasies, of common place or everyday subject matter, I am attempting to make the images live in two worlds, and thus question the nature of what is representation. How do we document and perceive the world around us? And what constitutes the sum total of our memories?
