Artist Statement:
Current works explore complex perceptual relationships within the context of an evolving mental landscape. Each piece presents fragments of an inner life: assembled images referring to experiences, books, conversations, and thoughts within a structural framework. The images rendered inhabit fields of color and pattern which divide and sub-divide the picture plane. Imagery stems from a rich library of personal and cultural references, ranging from folk art and architectural details to ancient relics and religious text. These works reflect aging and mutability. Each painting is an evolution in time. Former images, thoughts, and ideas are revised, edited out, or painted over. New images arise and develop, while others are sanded away, revealing underlying layers as remnants of process. The surfaces strike a balance between impulse and restraint, natural erosion and precise draftsmanship. The work is both celebratory and intimate, articulating an inner world and the nurturing power of time.
